Bungie isn’t expected to reveal Marathon at Sony’s September State of Play, with November being highly likely that the game could finally be shown off. It’s been a long road for Marathon, one that has been frequented by delays, difficulties, and controversy. According to sources, the wait for a re-reveal could be a little bit longer than anticipated.
After numerous rumors, Sony finally confirmed a new State of Play event for PlayStation happening on September 24. The 35-minute presentation appears to be a mix of first and third party announcements, with Saros from Housemarque being the only game confirmed so far. The lack of details has led fans to speculate on which games could be showcased, though it seems one upcoming Sony first party game won’t be shown either.
Marathon Not Expected To Be Shown at the September State of Play
Bungie’s Marathon, an extraction shooter set within the franchise of the same name, is apparently not going to be showcased at the State of Play. The news comes from Paul Tassi, who reported that sources have indicated to him that Marathon not only won’t be at the showcase, but there are currently no plans to release a blog or any other long-form style presentation before or after. Needless to say, fans will likely need to wait a while longer to see how Marathon has evolved from its previous closed alpha tests.
Speculation seems to point to a November reveal of some sort, which technically does align with Bungie’s previous Marathon Development Update plans for a Fall announcement, even if it is probably a little later than fans were expecting. However, the extra time is likely being put to good use at Bungie if any of the recent leaks are to be believed. Playtesters, who are technically under NDA restrictions, have revealed substantial changes, including the Faction system being completely redesigned, new content being added, and other gameplay mechanics to name a few.
For many, Marathon still has a lot to prove ahead of its launch in 2026. Bungie’s take on the extraction shooter genre left many players feeling underwhelmed during its closed testing phase, though that wasn’t actually the biggest issue. Marathon has experienced a number of controversies during its lengthy development cycle, with none bigger than Bungie being accused of plagiarism. While initially praised, the art design and aesthetic were ripped from the work of an artist known as Antireal. Bungie has since delayed the game and reports indicate that the art in question has been scrubbed completely, leaving many to wonder what the game looks like now.
