Match of the Day has announced the appointment of a new pundit mere hours before the start of the Premier League season.

Match of the Day have already announced a raft of changes to their presenting line-up for the 2024/25 season. Ian Wright has left the programme and, as a result, ex-England internationals Joe Hart and Theo Walcott have been added to the slate of pundits. And now, hours before Manchester United play Fulham in the opening game of the season, they have announced that former Manchester City captain Steph Houghton has also been added to the team.

Houghton has worked as a pundit before, doing so for various Lionesses games. She retired at the end of last season, having played for Sunderland, Leeds Carnegie, Arsenal, and Manchester City throughout her career, winning the WSL three times. She also won 121 caps for England.

Houghton said: "I am looking forward to being able to share my experiences and provide insights into the game that I love."

Match of the Day will return on Saturday and is likely to be headlined by either United's clash with Fulham or Liverpool's trip to newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
